I am a mom of 3 boys, on a tight budget for the next year as we are paying back our medical bills and car payment, and even after that, gonna work on some student loans. ugh.
I have cut our budget to bare essentials. Electric, Gas, Water, and a fairly priced comcast bundle package (tv, internet, home phone). We dropped cell phones, which has not been noticeable. I was surprised. In addition to that, we have a strict food budget of only $120 each week in which we include Channing’s formula and baby food, and Conner’s dog food. And a “paper product” (paper towels, toilet paper, diapers, wipes, etc) budget of $40 a week.
We shop at 3 different stores:
Aldi- bread, tomato sauce, pasta, canned food, and other pre-packaged all natural food.
Sams Club- meat, diapers, snacks.
My secret here is that 1> the meat we buy (all natural) cost $10 for 1 lb. at the local grocery store, but 4 lbs at sams club is only $10 for the same stuff! 2> we buy diapers and wipes and wont have to for like 3 months for the same price as buy diapers for just a month. 3> we buy large sizes of snack foods, then give the boys 5 different snacks each week, making the whole box last for a month or more. Ex:
Monday- Graham crackers
Friday- Fruit snacks
I give the boys’ snack at 10:30 and 3:30 so sometimes we’ll choose two snack for a day, but I only spend $20 on snacks (buying either store brand or using coupons) and they last a month!
Kroger- Milk, dinner extras for week, cereal, etc.
Also, rather than eating out, we pack lunches and sit at a park between errands.
I make my own cookies and desserts so that I get more, it is fun for the kids, and they are healthier.
Rent movies and build a fort.
Our local theatre (in the summer) has older kids movies for $2, which includes admission, popcorn, and a drink. So always keep an eye out for those things.
